It stated that “the fact that ‘devils’ are predominately comic figures”(pg32). This seems to show that ‘devils’ are a figment of our imagination and cold not be real. But, if ‘devils’ are hidden, then they can reek havoc without us paying attention and before we know it, we are in a mess.

I think we are more comfortable with the idea of evil that randomly harms people than we are of an evil demonic reality. Because in that reality it’s personal. It is very unsettling for people to think that there are demonic forces with plans to steal, kill and destroy. So the idea they don’t exist can be enticing! On the other hand an unhealthy interest in demonic activity can rapidly move a person, even a Christian off of what is most critical, following Jesus.

I believe Skrewtape is stating that in the early phase keeping his existence unknown is a more powerful tool because revealing himself to soon could have the opposite effect of causing the patient to flee back to the “enemy”.

By the devil hiding his existence, it makes it easier for him to manipulate man. We sometimes correlate horribles things only with the enemy, when in fact they can be a small issue or hindering. When we don’t believe in the enemy, it’s hard to differentiate that if it’s not good, it’s not from God.
